Gregory S. Whitt

The Architecture of Detail

Gregory S. Whitt is a master of precision—a traditionalist whose work serves as a bridge between the disciplined world of technical design and the soulful beauty of fine art.

A native of East Tennessee, Gregory’s artistic journey began at the age of six, evolving into a lifelong pursuit of capturing the intricate textures and hidden narratives of the world around us.

A Legacy of Design

Gregory’s technical foundation was forged at the University of Tennessee, where he studied Fine Arts before being recruited into the prestigious world of European automotive design.

In 1980, he relocated to Germany to serve as a designer for Porsche Automobiles, an experience that instilled in him an uncompromising eye for sleek geometry and mechanical perfection.

By 1983, Gregory transitioned to Central Florida, where he spent over 25 years as a premier architectural illustrator. This era of his career required an elite level of draftsmanship, translating complex structural visions into evocative, hand-rendered reality.

It was here that he mastered the "language of lines," learning how light, shadow, and perspective can transform a two-dimensional surface into an immersive environment.

Acclaim & Global Recognition

Gregory’s career is defined by a series of high-profile commissions and international awards that span the worlds of commercial illustration and fine art.

His technical prowess has been showcased on a global stage, from the pages of Road & Track magazine to the official postage stamps of Tanzania, Africa.

His commitment to excellence has earned him prestigious honors in a diverse array of competitions:

  • International Fine Art Honors: Gregory is a three-time recipient of the Luxembourg Art Prize Certificate of Achievement (2022, 2023, 2025) from the Pinacotheque.

  • Exhibition Highlights: He was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in the "East Meets West" international competition for The Village Elder, resulting in an invitation to London, England. Similarly, he received a Certificate of Merit from Centro Diffusione Arte magazine for the same piece, with an invitation to New York City.

  • Competitive Distinction: In the international Art Quest competition, his airbrush painting 1963 Ferrari GTO placed in the top 200 out of over 5,000 entrants.

  • Best of Show & Special Recognition: His oil painting Jerusalem – The Coming Storm earned Best of Show in Morristown, TN, and special recognition from the Light, Space, Time online gallery. Additionally, his pencil drawing 1960 MGA in the Yorkshire Dales received special recognition from the HMVC Gallery in New York.

  • Commercial Design Success: Gregory’s work in the racing world includes designing the livery for the NASCAR "Skoal Bandit" transporter for Harry Gant, which was voted the 2nd best-looking transporter in the 1987 Cup Series. He also holds an Excellence Award in brochure design from the IGI national competition and a 1st place win in the Friends of Wekiva art competition.

Beyond the gallery walls, Gregory’s illustrations are preserved in permanent print within two definitive volumes: Porsche: It’s My World and F1 Grand Prix Racing by the Numbers 1950 to 2019.

The Soul of the Machine: Automotive Heritage & Excellence

A central pillar of Gregory’s portfolio is his lifelong dedication to Automotive Heritage. Drawing from his definitive tenure with Porsche, Gregory views the automobile not merely as a machine, but as a masterpiece of kinetic sculpture.

His work in this category celebrates the golden era of vintage racing and the unrivaled elegance of luxury marques. Whether capturing the aggressive stance of a mid-century endurance racer or the refined chrome details of a classic touring car, Gregory utilizes a mastery of tonal pencil work, stippling, and vibrant gouache to honor the engineering excellence of the past.

These are high-fidelity tributes to the "Master Architects" of the automotive world, rendered with the technical precision of a designer and the evocative spirit of a fine artist.

The Philosophy of Intensity

Now returned to his roots in the Appalachian foothills of East Tennessee, Gregory has shifted his focus to a full-time pursuit of fine art. His work is characterized by a relentless devotion to extreme detail.

Whether he is utilizing rich oil glazes to capture a sun-drenched Tuscan terrace or employing meticulous tonal pencil work to render the weathered grain of a pioneer cabin, Gregory’s goal remains the same: to stop the viewer in their tracks.

"I am enthralled with the intensity of detail," Gregory observes. "There is so much to derive from exploring the minutiae of a subject. I hope to take the viewer into the exceptional world around us through that very intensity."

A Triad of Excellence: Architecture, Automotive, and Fine Art

Gregory’s body of work is defined by three core pillars: Architectural Integrity, Automotive Heritage, and Atmospheric Fine Art.

His automotive studies are high-fidelity explorations of mechanical soul and aerodynamic form. This same rigor extends to his architectural and landscape works, where he utilizes a versatile array of mediums—including color pencil, oil painting, gouache, and stippling in pen and ink.

By masterfully navigating these diverse subcategories, Gregory ensures that whether the subject is a classic European engine or a quiet Tennessee farmstead, it is rendered with a sophisticated level of detail that honors the legacy of the subject.

The Collector’s Experience

Gregory’s portfolio is a testament to versatility, ranging from the kinetic energy of mountain waterfalls to the sacred stillness of liturgical iconography. His ability to elevate everyday mediums—such as the Bic ink pen—into museum-grade illustrations is a hallmark of his unique talent.

Today, Gregory S. Whitt continues to produce work from his studio in East Tennessee, offering collectors a chance to see the world not just as a landscape, but as a meticulously crafted masterpiece of nature and history.
